EDL march cancels a wedding and closes the beach

The Police are allowing a march by the EDL through Nottingham city centre (on Saturday, 6th August), despite concerns over public safety prompting Nottingham City Council to close The Beach attraction in the Old Market Square  and one couple to cancel their wedding in The Council House.

The Beach was being enjoyed in this afternoon’s heat and sunshine, but the relative narrowness of the walkways around the attraction is also very clear; hence the march being routed away fromthe Old Market Square.
“Hope not Hate” describe the EDL as racist; they are particularly known for being islamaphobic and there are been some incidents in the past of EDL graffiti on facilities in The Meadows used by the Muslim community.
As it happens, and perhaps unlike elsewhere in the country, incidents of hate crime has fallen in The Meadows recently.
